What is SS-31?
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide — a small protein of just four amino acids — that targets the mitochondria, the energy-producing parts of the cell. What makes it distinctive is that it selectively reaches the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds there to cardiolipin, a lipid important for energy production. In research, SS-31 is therefore studied around mitochondrial function and cell energy. The substance is also known as elamipretide. How does SS-31 work?
The mitochondria produce energy (ATP) using structures in their inner membrane called cristae. Cardiolipin holds those structures in place. SS-31 binds to cardiolipin and is linked in research to keeping that membrane structure stable, protecting energy production and reducing oxidative stress (harmful reactive oxygen species). In short: it targets the "charging point" of the cell. It is thought that this supports mitochondrial function; most of this comes from laboratory and animal models.
