What does Epitalon do?
Epitalon is best known in research as a "longevity peptide". The attention centres on telomeres: the protective ends of your chromosomes that get shorter with every cell division. It is thought that Epitalon switches on the enzyme telomerase, which can help maintain those telomeres — and that is exactly where researchers look for the link to ageing. How does Epitalon work?
Epitalon comes out of research on the pineal gland. Researchers took apart epithalamin — a natural extract from that gland — and distilled this short tetrapeptide (AEDG) from it as the presumed active part. In cell and animal studies it is thought that Epitalon stimulates the production of telomerase (via the hTERT gene), so that cells would maintain their telomeres for longer. Most of what we know comes from that research, partly from Russian groups; GradePurity supplies Epitalon for research only.
Epitalon and telomeres
Telomeres are a central theme in ageing research: the shorter they get, the fewer times a cell can still divide. Telomerase is the enzyme that can lengthen telomeres again, but in most adult cells it is switched off. The reason Epitalon gets so much attention is that, in research, it is associated with switching telomerase on. What that means in the long term in humans has not been firmly established — we make no claims about it ourselves and supply Epitalon purely as a research material.
Epitalon and the sleep-wake rhythm
Besides the telomere angle, Epitalon is also studied around the pineal gland, the gland that makes melatonin and so regulates your day-night rhythm. It is thought that Epitalon can support that melatonin production, which is why it often comes up in research in the context of sleep and circadian rhythm. As with the telomeres, this comes mainly from early research; GradePurity supplies it for laboratory use only.
Dosage and form
On the market you see Epitalon as a freeze-dried vial and sometimes as a ready-made spray. In the literature it is usually studied in short courses of about ten to twenty days, sometimes repeated a few times a year.
