How does melanotan 2 work?
Melanotan 2 is a synthetic analogue of α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone). It acts as a non-selective agonist at the melanocortin receptors MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5. Through MC1 it is linked to pigment formation in the skin; through MC4 to appetite and sexual function. Because it acts on several receptors at once, its effect profile is broader than that of the natural hormone. Most of the research comes from animal models and early studies.
Melanotan 2 vs melanotan 1, the difference
Melanotan 1 and melanotan 2 are often confused, but they are different substances. Melanotan 1 (afamelanotide) is now an approved medicine used under medical supervision for a rare light-sensitivity condition. Melanotan 2 has never been approved for that and remains a research substance: it acts on more receptors, stays active longer and therefore has a broader effect and side-effect profile.
