HMG (human menopausal gonadotropin, also called menotropin) is a purified mixture of two gonadotropic hormones: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), in a roughly 1:1 ratio. Traditionally it is isolated from the urine of postmenopausal women. Unlike most products in our range, HMG is not a small peptide but a combination of glycoprotein hormones. In research it is studied around the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the chain that drives the gonads in both women and men. As a medicine, menotropin is known under brand names such as Menopur, Menogon and Pergonal and is used on prescription in fertility treatment. What does HMG do?
HMG delivers two hormones at once: FSH and LH. Together they form the signal that drives the gonads into activity, in women the ovaries (maturation of follicles), in men the testes (production of testosterone and the start of spermatogenesis). Where most substances in our range touch a single target, HMG covers the whole gonadotropic side: it brings both the FSH and the LH action. That is exactly why it plays such a central role in fertility research.
HMG vs. hCG
HMG and hCG are constantly compared because both act on the sex-hormone axis, but they do not bring the same thing. hCG mimics only LH: it acts directly on the gonads and stimulates testosterone production there. HMG, by contrast, delivers FSH and LH. That extra FSH is the difference that draws attention in research: FSH is the link that drives sperm maturation in men and follicle growth in women. In the literature the two are therefore often studied alongside or after one another, hCG for the LH side, HMG to add the FSH action as well. HMG for men and after a cycle
Around male fertility and the recovery of the body’s own hormone axis, HMG is a much-discussed topic. The background: during an external androgen cycle the body’s own LH/FSH production stalls, which makes the testes less active and lowers both testosterone and sperm production. Because HMG brings both LH and FSH action, research looks at whether it can supplement the gonadotropic signals that are then missing, often in combination with hCG. What is known about this is described in the scientific literature.
Brands: Menopur, Menogon and Pergonal
As a medicine, menotropin has been in use for decades under various brand names. Menopur and Menogon (from Ferring) are the best-known highly purified versions, used on prescription in IVF and IUI treatment; Pergonal was one of the first HMG preparations and has largely been replaced by the newer, cleaner versions. Those branded products are prescription pharmaceutical injections, meant for supervised medical treatment. What GradePurity supplies is something different: HMG as a research-grade substance for laboratory use, not a medicine and not a replacement for one. We name the brands here only for recognition and to set them apart.
Dosage of HMG
In the medical literature HMG is dosed in international units (IU), with 75 IU a common base unit, hence the format of our vial. The exact amounts and schedules from clinical use belong to supervised treatment and say nothing about laboratory use. Side effects of HMG
In the clinical literature the side effects of menotropin are described mainly in the context of fertility treatment. Reported are, among others, injection-site reactions, headache, abdominal pain and, with stimulation of the ovaries, the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
