What does tesamorelin do?
Tesamorelin is best known in research for one thing: reducing stubborn belly fat. It is a GHRH analogue, a compound that prompts the body to make more of its own growth hormone, rather than adding growth hormone from outside. It is thought that this natural route is what drives the effect on visceral fat (the deep fat around the organs) and on body composition.
How does tesamorelin work?
Tesamorelin mimics your own GHRH, the hormone your brain uses to signal the pituitary: "make growth hormone". As a result, growth hormone (and the related IGF-1) rises in a natural, pulsing way rather than in one big spike. It is thought this is why research focuses mainly on belly fat and recovery. It works for longer than ordinary GHRH because the peptide has been made more stable.
Tesamorelin and belly fat (visceral fat)
The best-known research line around tesamorelin is about visceral fat, the deep belly fat around the organs that is hard to shift. It was originally developed clinically (as Egrifta) to reduce exactly this type of fat. Important to know: it is not a general weight-loss drug like a GLP-1. It targets that deep belly fat specifically via the growth hormone route, not by suppressing your appetite.

Side effects of tesamorelin

Tesamorelin vs. ipamorelin
Tesamorelin and ipamorelin are often mentioned together in research, but they work via a different route. Tesamorelin is a GHRH analogue: it prompts the pituitary to release growth hormone. Ipamorelin is a GHRP (ghrelin receptor agonist) and stimulates growth hormone via a different switch. That is why they are sometimes combined in research, the two routes complement each other. Is tesamorelin legal?
Unlike many research peptides, tesamorelin is actually an approved medicine: under the brand name Egrifta it is registered on prescription for a specific condition (HIV-associated lipodystrophy). As a research-grade peptide it may be bought and held for laboratory research. Note: tesamorelin is on the WADA Prohibited List (growth hormone-releasing factors, category S2) and is banned in sport.
